French president Nicolas Sarkozy thinks so. He’s not the first Euorpean head of state to express that view, either.
He said, “Of course we must all respect differences, but we do not want… a society where communities coexist side by side.”
The last part of that statement rings really false to me. Isn’t that exactly what we want? Americans living next to Pakistanis living next to Indians living next to Japanese living next to Brazilians?
This also struck me as wrong when German chancellor Angela Merkel said it back in October. If multiculturalism had really “failed,” I’m not sure how the United States could even exist. Is the problem that immigrants don’t assimilate to their new countries fast enough? Or do the new countries not do enough to welcome immigrants?
