Unapologetic progressive. Fearless activist. Plucky liberal.

Today is the birthday of two more awesome American women: Sandra Day O’Connor was born in 1930 and Nancy Pelosi was born in 1940. O’Connor was the first woman appointed to the Supreme Court in 1981, and she served until her retirement in 2006. Before she was a justice, she was a deputy and assistant attorney general and the state majority leader in Arizona in 1973.

I’ve written about Pelosi before, and whatever you think of her, you can’t deny she’s a strong, effective leader. She would have to be, to rise to be Speaker of the House and get laws such as the Affordable Care Act passed. I for one am glad she’s still leader of the Democrats in the House, because it’s not clear who else could do the job. (Although if she ever steps down, my vote would go to Rep. Anthony Weiner, for whom I would consider moving to New York, just so I could call him my congressman.)

So happy birthday to two amazing women who persevered to make it to the top of their professions.

  1. I would consider a move into Rep. Anthony Weiner’s district too. He’s terrific.
