The court said retailers shouldn’t be asking customers for their ZIP codes, saying it can lead to figuring out their addresses and subjecting them to unwanted marketing campaigns. I have to say I’m happy to see this, because I never give out any personal information when paying with plastic. And I’ve gotten weird looks from cashiers, as if such information is harmless. But, as the court ruled, it’s not, or else retailers wouldn’t be asking for it.
For the record, you are not obligated to give out your ZIP code, e-mail address or any other identifying information to people who ask for it. Just say what I say: “I don’t give that out.” As an added bonus, it also cuts down on junk mail.
